Construction Techniques:
Jim's planes were unique. The skins were made of kevlar placed at a 45 degree bias. The ailerons were cut using the top skin as a hinge and the aileron lines curved toward the tips. The curving of the hinge line makes the flaperons behave just like a trileron and permits the wing to have not sharp corners. this reduces both stress damage as well as giving the airflow a smoother transition toward the tip. The flaperons are very large and effective. Jim also used very large tail surfaces, with the subrudder extending down quite far. Jim's planes were unique in the air and flew well. Jim placed 2nd in Eagle class. |
