Choosing a DLG: A Myriad of Options

By Chris Adams

Welcome to the world of Discus Launched Gliders (DLG).  As you look at which DLG you might like to try for your first plane, you will be in overwhelm.  This overwhelm will be in the form of the large number of choices that you may see combined with a multitude of opinions from all and everyone around you.  There are a number of threads on the internet, on RCgroups, in magazine articles and then in manufacturer or distributors which may contribute to your decision. In this article, a number of considerations will be presented to help with your considerations.  At the end of this article, references and links will be provided which you can use to do further research.  Good luck with whatever plane or decisions you make and we’ll see you at the field.

What things might you consider?  Here are some ideas:

1)     Have you seen a DLG flying or did you read about it recently?

2)     What is your experience level with RC flying?

3)     Is there a DLG group within your general location?

4)     How much do you want to spend on your first plane?

5)     Are you interested in competition?

6)     How much experience do you have with building a plane?  Have you built one before?

7)     Do you want something pre-built?  Does the plane have to be new?

8)     Do you have radio equipment already?  Is the radio on 2.4 gHz, or 72 MHz?

9)     Is this plane for your son or daughter?  Will you be flying together?

10)  What kind of physical shape are you in?  Do you easily get dizzy?

11)  Have you been given advice by someone who flies DLGs?
